CONSULTING MY ATLAS (GIN)
It's time to embrace the spirit of adventure and once again, I have the perfect gin for the occasion! I was very fortunate to win this bottle last year and I fell in love with the gin right from the start. I had a choice from their range, but it was a no-brainer for me, as this sounded delicious and just up my street.
Inspired by traditional Masala Chai, which is part of everyday life in India, the botanicals in Atlas Chai Gin include a warm and spicy selection of cinnamon, green cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, pimento berries and Assam Black Tea. The botanicals are infused for 24 hours before the gin is distilled in a copper still, resulting in a beautiful smooth gin with a dry finish which comes from the tea.
The Atlas story began in Edinburgh, where founder Paul Martin discovered his love of gin and back home in Lincolnshire he set about creating a range of gins which would appeal to adventurers and those who love to explore new flavours. Both the gin and the bottle branding are just gorgeous, which is no surprise really, given Paul is also the founder of a very successful graphic design consultancy, which specialises in brand identity. His vision and passion is clearly reflected in the beautiful artwork, which is
I don't think I need to say this again, but I love gins which are different and this tour is going to prove just that. I cannot wait to showcase some amazing and very different gins that are found all around the world. These gins will allow you to travel vicariously through their botanicals just as Chai Gin does. Close your eyes and let the fragrant spices of Chai Gin help you imagine you are sipping your G&T with the beautiful Himalaya's as a backdrop. This gin is definitely going to be your cup of tea and certainly is mine!
INTO THE OTHERWORLD
Let's get this trip going with a first stop in Ireland, with a gin that I thought would be a bit fun and be a little metaphor for the virtual tour!
I'm throwing in a little Celtic mythology here with this gin, which takes its name from the Ninth Wave, which is a giant wave that forms a barrier between Earth and the Otherworld - the home of seagod Mac Lir. The bottle represents the wave but is also a triskelion, which is a Celtic symbol which represents a journey to understanding, discovery and mystery. Hopefully you can see where I'm going with this, as this virtual tour is really going to be out of the ordinary and as with all my previous tours, it will be quite a journey of learning and understanding my own gin collection!
Of course, there is an emphasis on the number 9 and Hinch use nine botanicals, juniper, lemon verbena, cardamom, orange peel, coriander seeds, angelica root, orris root, cassia bark, grains of paradise. Their distillery is located south of Belfast on the Killaney Estate and they use water from the Silent Valley reservoir.
I'm going to stick with a simple G&T again, garished with blueberries. This is a very juniper forward gin with a little sweetness coming through in the middle and it has a long clean finish which I suspect comes from the lemon verbena. The flavours come through in waves, but I wouldn't have expected anything less!
So...this is my portal into the virtual tour of my gin collection! Let's see where I get thrown up next!!
